The designer Unn Søiland made history in the 50’s, designing new handknit patterns, and using wool with bright colors. That was very unusual at the time. This became popular - and ”Norwegian sweaters” became great international fashion. The Marius design later became a Norwegian icon, by being the most handknitted pattern in Norway over the last 65 years.
She later developed her hand-knit designs for unique collaboration with top french fashion designers, such as Christian Dior and Hubert de Givenchy, who presented her exclusive handknitted creations at their french catwalks in the 80’s.
In 2002, she was honoured the Norwegian Royal Medal of Merit in Gold, for her lifelong pioneer work of developing handknitting and making norwegian wooldesigns famous internationally.
